As far as I am concerned socialism is yesterday's doctrine that has by now been in retreat for so long that it cannot be taken seriously.

So why do you and a couple of others on this website still regard it as a live issue?

Well doc, I was sort of hoping that you would reveal why you see socialism as a threat rather that present me with videos of talking heads. :)

Socialism is the expression of our concern for people's well being. How can it be "yesterday's doctrine"?... It's like saying that environment protection is "yesterday's doctrine"...

I'll post Richard's essay here:
The incorrigibility of aristocrats may disappoint those who believed fervently in the perfectibility of human nature. Steven Pinker argued that humans were becoming more moral under the tutelage of enlightenment, that "the way to explain the decline of violence is to identify the changes in our cultural and material milieu that have given our peaceable motives the upper hand." Yet men with all the advantages proved apt to greed and perversion, reminding us that wealth, education and intelligence can accelerate evil as well as retard it. Perhaps the most famous warning against undue reliance on perfectibility comes from the movie Forbidden Planet.

When you scratch below the surface, what waits below social justice and endless calls for restitution and redistribution, is a hatred for life. That the blessed and fortunate exist at all is a misery that cannot be countenanced. Amor Fati be damned, the psyche of the modern progressive is of a over indulged and pampered infant. If the game of life won't go his way, the board is thrown over and the pieces broken and scattered.....

Generalizing is easy, but leads nowhere...

Socialism is the expansion of power for the few. Life without purpose has little meaning. Socialism has been suggested the answer to automation. Send everyone without purpose to the feed lot...

And when the feed lot becomes a real pain for those **with** purpose what then?

You can guard against generalisation being too low effort and pointless. Equivocation is the worst enemy, so make sure all your terms are consistent and relevant and corroboration from other sources helps too. Few models of socialist economies seem to address actual economics with a few exceptions (Scandinavia...) and those deviate from Marxist principles in important ways. Rather, they're consumed with transforming society from an existential viewpoint. Important radical socialists seem to know this, and oppose many leftist standards such as identity politics and radical feminism.....

Christian love and charity is the expression of our concern for people's well being. Over the past century socialism has too frequently manifest in the form of oppressive, sometimes murderously lawless, political power structures - which has brought it into global distribute.

Unfortunately in the Old World about a century ago Christian love and charity seems to have been popularly ditched in favour of socialism; presumably because the former did not offer devotees the opportunity to exercise political power over others.
